Workshop 2 - 21st August 2026 - 10am to 3pm

This opportunity to Workshop with David in his own Studio - to understand and learn the secrets of the Island that has inspired David and partner Diana for many years is a unique moment in time!

  • David has offered to Workshop for ½ a Day in the Studio in the morning of each of these Workshop Days, and
  • Then outdoors - weather permitting in the afternoon

How does David prepare for painting and what Materials, to bring with you to the Workshops!

Preparation of the Painting Surface:

  • Please bring Medium density fibre board as the support for stretching paper, this board is thin enough to cut with stanley knife and snap.
  • Paper is wet thoroughly both sides and placed on board, stretched and held in place by gummed paper tape.
  • Then fine staples around the edge a centimetre or so in from edge - you can then leave this to dry overnight it flattens out and ready to paint on - so bring staples which are short and use (mdf )board, and if you are confident pre-prepare your board prior to coming to the Workshop!

David's Preferred Papers - please bring a selection of these at least 56 x 38cm in size or full sheets ready to break down to smaller working pieces as David requests:

  • Arche rough 300 gsm 
  • Arche rough 185gsm 
  • Baohong Masters Choice - Cold pressed or medium 
  • Saunders Waterford rough 300gsm 
  • Spare paper for testing 

Brushes and Pens:

  • Escoda round large and small
  • Neef flat large and small - Senior Art Supplies in Melbourne stock these
  • I use a Rapid Fineline R 13 Ergonomic 4mm waterproof ink pen

Suggested Paint Colours to bring - but you don't need to have all of them, please bring what you have:

Daniel Smith is David's preferred Brand - but as you see below there is a mix of Brands possible:

  • Manganese blue hue 
  • Cobalt blue 
  • Cobalt Teal blue
  • French Ultramarine 
  • Thalo blue green shade
  • Moonglow
  • Perylene green 
  • Quinacradone Magenta
  • Organic vermillion 
  • Permanent Orange
  • Cadmium Lemon
  • Aureolin
  • Aussie red gold
  • Raw siena (Winsor & Newton.)
  • Burnt Siena (Winsor & Newton)

Other Useful Tools:

  • Eraser 
  • 2b, 3b pencils sharpened.
  • Masking fluid (Winsor & Newton).
  • Spray bottle at 2 dollar shop.
  • Tissues, extra masking/stretching tape and knife .
  • Towel or cloth 
  • Angled easel to work on - Easel and stool for outdoors use.

 

 Who Is David Taylor A.W.I. F.V.A.S  

David has been recognized and revered internationally for his painting, teaching and his services to the Arts. David’s painting career expands over many years of studying the art of watercolour painting and he has been involved in teaching his great love of this medium to painters and students both in Australia and overseas since the late sixties.

His numerous achievements include well over 100 awards for his watercolours, including the Herald Sun Best of Show; Gold Medal Award at the Camberwell Rotary Exhibition 2002 and 2011, won the Silver medal in 1976 and 2007. He won the prestigious Victorian Artists Society Artist of the Year Award in 1976, 1980, and again in 1989, and in the same year he received the Distinguished Leadership Award for outstanding services to Watercolour and teaching from the International Directory of Distinguished Leadership and a certificate of merit for distinguished service to the community. His works are represented in numerous public and private collections Worldwide.

David’s work is regularly exhibited in Australia, China, the United States, in England, the Channel Islands and Stockholm. He has held regular one-man exhibitions of his work since 1975. In each Exhibition he expresses his love of working freely on location and his love of spontaneity, shape, light and colour. There have been many varying influences on his painting journey and aspires to the impressionists Monet, Turner, and the expressive John Singer Sergeant, also to include Winslow Homer, Brabazon Brabazon and Whistler to name a few.
