Terms and Conditions of Entry and Sale of Work for the - Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale - 2025

Artwork is to be on the nominated size paper (see the Category sizing below) on at least 300gsm or heavier Watercolour Paper of any brand for Categories 1, 2 and 4 and Category 3 to be on an Experimental Substrate or 3D Paper with watercolour as required.

90% of the materials to be used are to be water based mediums from any brand:

  • Water based pigments
  • Water based inks
  • Water based markers
  • Water based pencils

10% of materials can be introduced mixed media - including fibre and introduced paper/s

There are Four (4) Possible Categories for Entry to the Australian Watercolour Muster - 2025 - your can choose which one you would like to enter. You are welcome to enter up to 3 pieces of Work in each Category as you would like!

  • Category 1 | 1/2 Sheet Watercolour on Watercolour Paper we recommend 300gsm or above = 56 x 38cm either landscape or portrait direction of your paper – This Category will be judged by our panel of Judges and Finalists from this Category will be Showcased for 12 months on the Australian Watercolour Muster - Digital Gallery.

30 Best in Muster Entries will be selected from this Category 1 - will be Exhibited Live in The Court House Gallery Cairns - from 17th September to 8th November 2025 - thanks to Cairns Regional Council.

  • Category 2 | Free size up to 1 mtr - Watercolour on Paper we recommend 300gsm or above = from miniature up to 1 x metre either landscape or portrait direction of your paper - This Category will be judged by our panel of Judges and Finalists from this Category will be Showcased for 12 months on the Australian Watercolour Muster - Digital Gallery.

1 Best in Muster from this Category 2 - will be Exhibited Live in The Court House Gallery Cairns - from 17th September to 8th November 2025 - thanks to Cairns Regional Council.

  • Category 3 | Watercolour on an Experimental Substrate Canvas, Board or Aluminium or other base within size allowed, and may be sculptural in effect e.g an Art book or paper sculpted into a form with watercolour artwork on the surfaces  = This may be up to 1 metre in size on all sides - landscape or portrait direction of your paper. This Category will be judged by our panel of Judges and Finalists from this Category will be Showcased for 12 months on the Australian Watercolour Muster - Digital Gallery.

1 Best in Muster from this Category 3 - will be Exhibited Live in The Court House Gallery Cairns - from 17th September to 8th November 2025 - thanks to Cairns Regional Council.

  • Category 4 | International Artists Entry = This may be from 1/4 Sheet 28 x 19 cm - landscape or portrait direction of your paper.
  • We recommend 300gsm or heavier - Watercolour Paper for the best Exhibition of your Work
  • This Category will be judged by our panel of Judges and Finalists from this Category will be Showcased for 12 months on the Australian Watercolour Muster - Digital Gallery.

A Selected Number - (yet to be determined) from this Category 4 - will be Exhibited Live in The Court House Gallery Cairns - from 17th September to 8th November 2025 - thanks to Cairns Regional Council.

Dates - The key date related conditions are as follows:

  1. Art works will only be considered if they are submitted by the Closing Date for Initial Submissions as detailed on the Key Dates section of this Website.
  2. Accepted art works will be displayed on the Australian Watercolour Muster - digital portal from the 17th September 2025 along with notification to the 32 Best in Muster - 2023 who will be selected and hung in the Cairns Court House Gallery between the 17th September and 8th November 2025.
  3. The Artists who are selected as one of the 32 Best in Muster 2023  - must ensure Delivery as detailed on the Key Dates section of this Website. No late works will be displayed or accepted for Exhibition.
  4. All art works Virtual and Physical, must remain on display for the full duration of the Australian Watercolour Muster designated dates for
    1. the Digital Exhibition - which continues to be showcased into 2025/6, and
    2. all Physical Exhibition - dates 17th September to 8th November 2025 at the Court House Gallery - Cairns Australia

Fees and commissions:

  1. An entry fee of $AUD45, as detailed in the Fees and Commissions section of the this Website, will be charged for each art work on submission and payable via the online entry system. Entry fees are not refundable.
  2. A commission of 25%, detailed in the Fees and Commissions section of this website, will be deducted from the catalogue price if the work is sold either off the Australian Watercolour Muster Digital Gallery or physically in Cairns during the Exhibition period of the 17th September 2025 to 8th November 2023.

    Commission fees go directly to support the ongoing work of the Australian Watercolour Muster and our 'Remote and Rural' Painting trips - with the goal to encourage and support Artists to grow their skills and Studios practices for the future.

Digital Entry of Your Artwork/Upload of your images as part of the Entry Process:

  1. Please include in the file path / name of the image you submit and your artist name, the name of the image is important so we can track the image and trace it to you easily!
  2. You will be guided by the Entry details on the Gallery 247 Portal - as to how to load your artwork and images for the Submission process - if you have any difficulties with this process please contact Australian Watercolour Muster - 2025 - Curator Wyn Vogel and/or Gallery 247 for further advice

Showcasing the Finalist's Work -

  1. All Artwork selected as 'Finalists' by the Judges for 2025 - will be showcased live on the Australian Watercolour Muster Digital Gallery - from the 17th September 2025 to the completion of the Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale - 2025 period (TBA).
  2. Up to 32 Artworks - the ‘Best in Muster 2025’ – from Artists across Australia will be selected for Exhibition in The Court House Gallery Cairns from the 17th September to 8th November 2025.
  3. A nominated number of International Artists Entries from Category 4 - will be selected for Exhibition in The Court House Gallery Cairns from the 17th September to 8th November 2025.

Live - Workshops, Plein Air Painting and evenings to enjoy along the esplanade in Cairns - will be based in two locations this year 2025 - 

  • The Court House, and
  • The Tanks - Cairns Botanical Gardens

Delivery of Artwork ready to go to Cairns for Framing and Exhibition - If Selected as 1 of the 32 Best In Muster 2023

  1. Artwork will be required to be delivered to the Curator of the Australian Watercolour Muster by Express Mail - to the Address and by the Date - which will be notified with the Confirmation of Selection Letter - which will be provided to the 32 Artists judged as 'Best in Muster - 2021' within the KEY DATES notified on this Website.
  2. Artwork is to be delivered flat if possible and/or in a wide tube to enable the Artwork to not become twisted and hard to frame.
  3. Artwork will be framed by the Australian Watercolour Muster and Cairns Regional Council into frames and hung for the duration of the Exhibition in The Court House Gallery - within the KEY DATES notified on this Website.

Return of Art Work to the Artists

  1. Artists based in Cairns must collect their unsold Artwork from the Court House Gallery Cairns on the 9th November 2025 - between the hours of 10am and 4pm.
  2. Return of unsold Physical art works from interstate and international Artists - from Exhibition in Cairns will be by the Court House Gallery Staff to the Australian Watercolour Muster Curator - Wyn Vogel and Wyn will distribute the unsold artwork to each Artist, this will be -
  3. Via Australia Post as agreed with the Australian Watercolour Muster Curator - appropriate freight costs depending on the Artists location - being paid to the Australian Watercolour Muster management team, as agreed.
  4. Designated Collection/Return to Artists times as detailed in the Key Dates section of this Website.

Other Conditions

  1. On Entering your Artwork for selection for the Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale you will be asked to nominate a Sale Price and also estimated freight costs which will be added to the sale for the Customer to pay - so please ensure you do enter these details at the beginning of your submission.
  2. Finalist's Work sold online and/or physically during the designated period of sales will be notified to the Artist by The Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale Curator Wyn Vogel or by Gallery 247 for Digital Sales, and the Artist will be responsible for shipping the Work to the Client within 14 business days of notification, the Client is to pay the freight.
  3. Work will be shipped unframed unless private arrangements are made between the Artist and their Buyer.

Insurance:

  1. Whilst all reasonable care will be exercised by the Organisers all entries are submitted at the total risk of the Artist. The Artist will by entering their Work into the Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale/Gallery 247 Art Show System, indemnify the Organisers against any claim, loss or damage of whatever nature or cause however occurring and whether directly or indirectly relating to entered works or their delivery.
  2. It is strongly recommended that each Artist has independent suitable insurance cover for the duration of the event.

Responsibilities:

  1. Artists accept responsibility for freight and other charges incurred in the delivery or return of an entry.
  2. Artist’s are responsible for keeping their mobile, email address, GST and EFT payment details up to date on the online system to ensure they receive updates before, during and after the Show, and the appropriate payment for sold artworks.

Prizes:

  1. The Australian Watercolour Muster is not a competition - the goal of the 'Muster' is to celebrate the best of Australian and now in 2025, International Art and build opportunities for our Australian Artists to mix it with the best of International Artists through our liaison and contact with Artists/Galleries and Materials Suppliers from the network formed across 80 countries - as part of FabrianoInAcquarello - Italy.
  2. This year we have invited some of our International Artist to be part of our Australian Watercolour Muster Biennale 2025 and these Artists will be here in Australia for you to meet and work with them in Workshops and Demonstrations >>> check out the full Program 

Publicity:

By Entering and Submitting your Artwork - you authorise the Organisers to photograph, video and/or publish your work for the purposes of producing a catalogue or otherwise promoting the Show by any means.
