DESCRIPTION:
'The Chicory Kiln &amp\; The Old Pines' - Phillip Island - Artist Wyn&nbsp\;Vogel
Friday 21st August 2026 9.30am to set up and 10am start - 2.30pm finish -to enable time to go and explore the Island for Plein&nbsp\;Air with Wyn&nbsp\;Vogel
The Choice - Elements of The Landscape -What's needed to Build Your Painting
Wyn&nbsp\;is a big believer in letting the landscape soak into her mind and then choosing which elements to work with\, rather than just replicating the actual 'View' - so she will discuss this with you and explain her approach and logic (😅 if there is any) to her choices!
The basis of the Work is to create an emotional connection for the Viewer - in the Workshop Sample above - Wyn&nbsp\;took the emotional connection that was evoked by the need for Australia during the World Wars to find an alternative to Coffee.
So here on Phillip Island one of the critical industries was the growing of Chicory plants which were then harvested and dried in the 'Chicory Kilns' and ground into a powder to make the alternative 'coffee' drink!
Thinking about those days - and the fact that at the same time the farmers planted small trees - now massive Pine Trees - bent and damaged by the years of weather - wind and rain on Phillip Island - these and the Chicory Kilns have a very strong 'EMOTIONAL' vibe that resonates with Wyn&nbsp\;as an Artist.
Keen to read the full history click across to the Phillip Island and District&nbsp\;Historical Society&nbsp\;&gt\;&gt\;&gt\; https://phillipislandhistory.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Chicory-and-Phillip-island2.pdf
Techniques:
Wyn&nbsp\;varies her approach to adding paint to her paper - this can be 'Wet on Wet' or 'Wet on Dry' - or Wyn&nbsp\;is known to take her paper and dredge it onto the ground to pick up the colours of the pigments - this was particularly a great approach in The Kimberley at our last 'Remote and Rural' - where the red ochre was plentiful on the road - so be prepared for the unexpected!
